He’s been promising for ages because no matter how much she begs, he can’t bear to take her. The longer he can stall, the more time he can have with her. He just looks so heartbroken, and care worn. Even though the actor isn’t any older, the older version of the Doctor looks so much older. Like he’s been through so much more. And now he has to say goodbye to his River Song, his Melody Pond.
